Sources: LeBron says he'll stay
In a last-ditch effort to recruit Trevor Ariza away from the Houston Rockets, LeBron James told Ariza he would remain with the Cavaliers past 2010, according to a person close to Ariza.It sounds like a failed recruiting stunt only; but if Mr. James is not a prevaricator here, this would make teams trying to clear cap room for a shot at LeBron rethink that pipe-dream. Let us see if the 2010 frenzy dies down or not. If not, then NBA GMs do not place much stock in Mr. James' word, only contract inking. Trevor Ariza was smart not to bite on such an assurance. The only thing that might keep the uber-ambitious LeBron James as a Cleveland Cavalier is a combination of more money and, with investors from China considering buying into the Cavaliers, a better chance to tap the China market, and hopefully increase his market value globally.

Sac travelers to meet the Casspi family
|
Led by unofficial tour director Rabbi Reuven "Bob" Taff, 21 members of Sacramento's Mosaic Law Congregation are en route to Israel for a 10-day trip that will include a visit with Omri Casspi's famiy at his home outside Tel Avis. Although the rookie forward is in Sacramento preparing to play for the Kings in the Las Vegas Summer League, with practices beginning Wednesday, his parents extended an invitation to the groups after learning of their plans through a mutual friend. "I have a friend over there who happens to be close with Omri's father," said Taff, "and he made the arrangements. Ilana (Casspi's mother) initially said she wanted to cook for us, but I said, 'no, no, that's too much trouble.' So we settled on light refreshments. We'll go over there after we land in Tel Aviv about 6. p.m., Tuesday. We asked everyone in our group to bring a Kings T-shirt. One family even designed their own T-shirts with a Kings logo intertwined with the star of David, and Omri's jersey number (18) in Hebrew. I also went to Arco Arena and had four shirts made - the ones they had at the rally that say, 'New Kings on the Block." We're going to present the shirts to Omri's parents (Shimon and Ilana) and his sister (Aviv) and brother (Eitan) when we get there. This is such a historic moment for the state of Israel. If Omri has an impact ... it would be incredible." The rangy 6-foot-9 Casspi, a small forward who played for Maccabi Tel Aviv before the Kings selected him with the second of their two first-round picks (23rd overall) in the recent NBA Draft, will become the first Israeli to play in the NBA. Taff, who says the size of his bi-annual travel groups had been almost halved because of the economy, expects a sizable representation from the Jewish community at the Kings home opener. "I don't think there's any doubt about that," he added. "They take their basketball very seriously in Israel." We'll catch up with Taff and the weary travelers after they meet with the Casspi family on Tuesday. Hopefully, we'll have some photos from the scene. Meantime, here's a quick glimpse of the Sactown adventurers. (Rabbi Taff is in the pink shirt).

Draft pick signings? | ||
|
Other NBA teams have already begun signing their draft picks.
When will the Kings sign Tyreke Evans and Omri Casspi? With all the talk about how much they like these picks, why haven't they signed them already? And will they sign Jon Brockman? |

I know hes not a scorer (ie petrie guy) but I would be totally on board with dropping a 3 yr 18mil offer on Chris Anderson - rebounding and blocking shots
would be a welcome sight to the Sac frontcourt

Me too, SDKappaSig. But it seems that Chris Anderson loves Colorado and his life there.

i wrote:My thoughts on this group. Chris Anderson - love him. He's a weak individual defender in the post, but otherwise he gives exactly what the Kings need - a long, athletic big who can rebound and block shots. But he belongs in Denver, especially after finally getting his life together, and just isn't the type of player worth breaking the bank for. Brandon Bass - Undersized and not a great defender. I don't see a reason to sign him Glen Davis - I like Davis and he's a good scoring big with decent shooting and surprising ball handling and a strong position defender in the post. But he's also undersized and not a good rebounder or shotblocker. Ike Diogu - Like what he brings and has showed some signs of being an actual contributor. Like most on this list he is undersized, but he has a familiarity with the team and could come cheap. A one year deal or a small multi-year would be okay with me. Not ideal, but okay. Channing Frye - Softer than Charmin. No thanks. Drew Gooden - Will demand a higher price than he's worth and simply doesn't add the dimensions that the Kings need Marcin Gortat - Would love to have him but (1) he's got more attractive suitors and (2) he'll command a salary that will eat significant caproom. Unless he was going to supplant Hawes or Thompson as a starter, that's too much money for a backup big. Walter Hermann - I think for the same price Diogu would give the same things but better. David Lee - Again, doesn't bring what the Kings need. I like him, but not a great fit IMO especially for the price. Antonio McDyess - Will likely sign with a vet filled contending team. Doesn't have the same value for a rebuilding team that wants to run. And with his athleticism sapped by age his size and defense are issues. Paul Milsap - Another undersized overacheiver, but probably my favorite of the bunch. But again, not worth the price tag if the Kings are gearing up to make a splash in free agency next offseason. Chris Mihm - Depending on his health and price may be worth a shot. On a one year deal, I'd take him. Fabricio Oberto - Would also be happy with him as a one ear rental. Lamar Odom - An intriguing player, but just too maddeningly inconsistent. And if he wasn't bringing it every night for a title team, what would the Kings see from him. He'd have a hefty price tag and wouldn't prove worth it IMO. Besides, even after all the posturing I'd be shocked if he didn't re-up with the Lakers. ZaZa Pachulia - Not a big fan and his price would be too high, but I wouldn't mind him. Anderson Varejao - Again, not a huge fan. And certainly not interested in eating up caproom for him. But if he could be had in a sign-and-trade for Garcia or Nocioni I'd take it. Would clear the logjam at SF and give an active big. Those are my takes anyway. |

I think Davis and Diogu make the most sense for the Kings. I'd be pleased to see either on the roster. |

Orlando Summer League: Day 1
i |
Yeah, right. | ||
Yeah, right. Got caught in a lie and is having to back-peddle and do spin control. 2010 bidding war at stake. |
|||
i |
July 8 | ||
|
Tomorrow, we will see who actually signs with who; and from there on out, throughout the Summer, transactions will continue.
The economy and the luxury tax, and memories of horrific overpaying of players, is going to diminish free agents' chances of a those gigantic paydays they and their agents have been fantasizing about. Teams are saving their insane Rashard Lewis money for mega-stars like LeBron James and Dwayne Wade. Then again, what happens in 2010 when these owners and GMs have saved all that cap room and cannot get either of these guys? Will the get stupid again? |
