Hedo aka Turk | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
Like I suggested yesterday, Hidayet Turkoglu, who was dubbed Hedo with the Kings but is called Turk with the Magic, is a player I think would help make Geoff
draft picks work better; and I hope Geoff gives Hedo some consideration.

If what the media suggests he is asking for in a new contract is true, Hedo is not worth $50 million over five years... |

Sacramento Kings roster (?)
|
Sacramento Kings roster (including guaranteed rookie contracts) (circa today):
Kevin Martin SG Andres Nocioni SF Kenny Thomas (expiring contract) Beno Udrih PG Francisco Garcia G/F Tyreke Evans G Spencer Hawes C Jason Thompson F Sergio Rodriguez PG Omri Casspi F Donte Greene F This means, IF the Kings are going to place both first round picks on the roster, they will need at least TWO more players to have a minimum NBA roster and four more for a maximum roster. Will they engage in the free agency, off-season trades, or re-sign their own free agents and/or camp/Summer league players? There are some very intriguing players who went undrafted. |

eye of the beholder | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||

I guess it is a case of the eye of the beholder; because, relative to guys like Rashard Lewis, who is getting over $20 million per season, I think Hidayet
Turkoglu, who outplayed him markedly, is comparatively worth more than $10 million per season.
The money rich and talent rich Trailblazers are not flinching at that number for Hedo right now.

I could see Hedo having game till he's 35. If he doesn't? It disrupts the youth movement. It would disrupt anyway to a point. But a crafty veteran can
have major influence on the young guys.

Hedo is 30. He is seeking a $50 million 5 year contract. If he played only three more years close to the level he has played the last two, it might be worth
it; because he could be a good influence, even a leader of sorts, for the Kings' young players - a clutch, extremely versatile player, an accomplished
veteran fresh from the NBA Finals. But unlike he was treated while a King, he would only be valuable to the Kings if Paul Westphal treated him like he was
treated in Orlando last season - showing confidence in him and encouraging him to take clutch shots and with the ball in his hands at crucial periods in a
game. He thrives in that setting. Too bad Lewis' contract prohibits the Magic re-signing him.
Andres is only 8 months younger with three years guaranteed (but his contract allocates less money to him in each successive year), Francisco is 28 with four years guaranteed, Beno is 27 with three years guarantee with a fourth at his option (and if the he does not force the Kings to play him by outstanding performance during his minutes on the court, his contract may become a Kenny Thomas contract type albatross). Though the Kings are in a rebuilding and youth movement, they will need savvy veterans with skills to help the team win games while the youth brigade are learning on the job.

I can't wait for Kenny Thomas to be off the team. Can't stand his pouty attitude on the bench. Hopefull they will trade him before February trade
deadline. There has got to be a team and an injury out there somewhere to make that happen.

July 1st | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
On July 1st, NBA GMs can start dickering with free agent players' agents.
The Kings will have to look at their own free agents and look at other free agents who will be available off of other teams' rosters. They can reconsider their own Ike Diogu and Rashad McCants, or not. Though the Kings will not be going after Mike Bibby or Ron Artest, they might consider players such as: Zaza Pachulia, Stephon Marbury, Ben Gordon, Anderson Varejao, Brandon Bass, Jason Kidd, James Singleton, Alan Iverson, Rasheed Wallace, Von Wafer, Trevor Ariza, Lamar Odom, Al Harrington, Hidayet Turkoglu, Andre Miller, Drew Gooden, Shawn Marion, Carlos Boozer, and Memet Okur. If the Kings want some viable veteran help they might be able to afford and get good bang for the buck, they might consider: (front court) Drew Gooden, Al Harrington, Zaza Pachulia, (4 out of 5 positions) Hidayet Turkoglu, and/or (back court) Von Wafer.

Trades? | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
The Kings have already made one trade so far this off-season - the #31 pick (thus missing a shot at Sam Young or DeJuan Blair) in the recent draft to the
Trailblazers, who picked Jeff Pendergraph for PG Sergio Rodriguez and the #38 pick the Kings used on Jon Brockman (instead of Marcus Thornton, Chase Budinger,
Nick Calathes, Goran Suton, Jack McClinton, A.J. Price, Nando De Colo, Robert Vaden, or Patrick Mills - the PG still on the board I hoped they would take and
keep).
So, since they have already made one trade, why not another? The first one is the Kenny Thomas expiring contract for somebody or a pick or or or... |

thoughts on the frontcourt ...

If Petrie elects to re-sign Diogu at an in-house-bargain level, I would give my doctoral blessing
Relative to the field, Diogu is the likeliest relevant prospect to be significantly undervalued as Anderson, Gortat, and Varajao have seen plenty of minutes on ESPN. Diogu was a lottery pick based on his potential. Based on the insonsistent coaching and frontcourt depth of certain rosters and his relative youth at 25, should the Kings not consider him a viable re-building option if the price is right? Lest we forget his crazy physical attributes (see below).
If anything, I could see Diogu and Brockman in some great battles together in training camp, which might help elevate both their games as well as set the tone. I expect Brockman's role more that of instigator of Diogu. I expect Petrie can't help but think about the possibility of re-signing Diogu in his frontcourt plans. And I believe Nocioni can co-exist with Diogu as a legit option at power forward behind Jason Thompson as they bring different skill sets. What do you all think of Gavin Maloof bringing up Hawes' impact on drafting Brockman during the press conference? Might this not help Spencer feel heard (obviously improtant to him) and serve the purpose of signing Haves long term on the cheap? |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||

They can bring back both Diogu and McCants if they think they can afford it. But I doubt they will. Have they been offered qualifying offers?
Besides, there are cheaper options out there in the undrafted players still available: Josh Heytvelt and Paul Harris come immediately to mind. As to Brockman, it was obviously done to appease Spencer Hawes. But if they intend to keep Brockman to keep Spencer happy, I do not see Diogu staying. Also, Diogu will not be coming to camp without a contract. So, Brockman will be there to earn a spot and pal around with Spencer. I mean, there were quite a few players who looked like better prospects to me than Brockman. And I liked Brockman in the few games I saw him in. But over Marcus Thornton, Goran Suton, Jack McClinton and Patrick Mills? Come on.

If they resign Diogo, I would think it would be to play backup center minutes.

One would think. Yes. But how much are they willing to pay for that service? The qualifying offer alone is $3,946,874. If they offer it and he accepts it, what
kind of contract would they have to extend?

Is Diogu really worth signing because he had two good games at the end of the year?
|
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Ike Diogu? Probably not, at $4 million per year.
I mean, Beno had some good games when he was brought over; but what happened last season? I order to be worth the money being projected to spend on him he would have to be a topflight backup point and a competent starter when called upon. Sure, it could happen; but, regardless the reason for his bad season, the hopes people has for him are all but gone. That is why the Kings were so hot for Ricky Rubio for awhile but then traded for Sergio Rodriguez and drafted Tyreke Evans. They are looking at Beno's contract as another albatross; and he will have all that to overcome to prove he is worth his paycheck - which will be hard to do with limited minutes on the floor. Ike Diogu's qualifying offer is the problem. Whether Ike can rise to the occasion constantly like he did those two games at the end of last season or not is a weighty question for a franchise that is hurting financially and the qualifying offer they must make to make him a restricted free agent is almost $4 million. Josh Heytvelt, an undrafted (due to dismissed drug charges not due to a lack of ability), but skilled and underrated big, might be a less expensive option, if somebody else does not snap him up first. Even better, due to Tyreke Evans already on the team, might be Shawn Taggart. He is a very formidable man, and can shoot, pass, and dribble well for someone of his size. He can get down low pretty fast, and he is a master at defense. Jon Brockman might be tough, and Spencer Hawes' pal, but he does not have the height or size of either of these undrafted bigs. And then there are skilled veteran bigs looking for mid-level money, that Geoff already likes, in Drew Gooden, who would strengthen the Kings frontcourt rotation - and Chris Anderson, who might demand too much money to outbid the Nuggets.
