hunkering down in their war rooms | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
...teams are hunkering down in their war rooms and starting to get serious. The real trade offers, and not the nonsense you've heard about over the last month, are being made. Teams with high picks like Sacramento, Minnesota and Memphis are having a last round of workouts and interviews this weekend with the top prospects. |

Top 5 point guards | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Top 5 point guards
Jrue Holiday will have to become a point guard in the NBA; but he was a shooting guard in high school, a combo guard in one year in college and, though physically gifted, is NOT currently a top five POINT GUARD. Rubio is listed correctly; but, for the KINGS, I personally prefer Flynn to the others listed after Rubio. Each person projected to be a point guard in the NBA has potential, including many not listed here, but it depends on the team and the situation and the coach and what kind of game plan and approach and roster they inherit as to whether they are right for the team that drafts them. |

I like what I am hearing about these two as another possible selection with our second round pick:
Nick Calathes http://www.draftexpress.c...file/Nick-Calathes-1237/ and http://www.nbadraft.net/players/nick-calathes Sergei Gladyr http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Sergey-Gladyr-5702/ I still am also high on Rodrigue Beaubois as well with that same pick. Also I still believe we need a backup 4/5, as well as another pg obviously. The pg crop in this draft is obviously very good, so if a guy like Maynor, or a top notch pg prospect slips, and we go pg with the 1.4, and 1.23 then maybe this guy would be interesting with our second rounder Alade Aminu http://www.draftexpress.c...rofile/Alade-Aminu-1389/ Sure he sounds very raw, but he also seems to have the physical tools to play the game in spades. Vyacheslav Kravtsov http://www.nbadraft.net/players/vyacheslav-kravtsov I also like Claver, and Omri Casspi, but I think to get both would be duplication, not just that they both would be sp/pf with the same type skill sets, but remember we also have Andres Nocioni who is a sf/pf as well. I really think pg, and pf/c are our biggest needs, and that we need another athletic big man. However I believe Geoff may just go best player available with the last two picks. I just hope the selling rumors, are just that rumors. I hope we make our picks in the late first, and early second round. If they are for Europeans who will be going back to Europe for the season, so be it. We would still have their rights. To sell them for cash, after we did all that cost cutting near the deadline last year, would be thoroughly disappointing. At the end of the day, you need talent, and we have the makings of a talented young team, but we still need more help. |

I am hearing that the Spurs are very high on drafting Victor Claver. If this proves true, this means two things: Buford and Popovich have assessed Victor as a
steal and will take him with their first round pick and, if anyone else wants him (like the Kings), they will not be able to get him in the second round.

This young man looks very interesting as well. I especially like the fact that he can guard perimter players

He does. And it is rumored the Lakers may take him with their first round pick and keep him overseas for at least a year.

i wrote:If whoever wrote this is including combo guards that will likely play the point, how is Tyreke Evans not on this list? At least he played the point on the college level. Even Westbrook (who Holiday is compared to) played some point at UCLA when Collison was hurt. I'm not saying Holiday won't be able to transition to the point, but how a writer could glean that he's the second best PG in a this PG heavy draft I have no idea. Even Jennings and Rubio are hard to project because of the level of competition and playing in a different league. And in Jennings case, playing few minutes often out of position. Really I think teams are evaluating his high school film more and treating him like a kid making the jump straight from prep to pros. Even more than usual, most articles about the draft right now hold very little value, including one that proclaims Holiday to be the 2nd best PG. By what measure? |

Frankly, I do not understand the whole notion of working out Ricky Rubio. The type of workouts being done this year are not condusive to discovering how
a player will do in a game situation. And when Ricky was even younger, he wowed the U.S. contingent with how well in played against Chris Paul, Deron Williams
and Jason Kidd. He is even better now and will only continue to improve. His first season will be period of adjustment; but if the Kings need to have him
workout to draft him, I must either question their intelligence or their motives or both.

REALLY. The kind of workouts being done this year in the NBA are of little use in determining whether or not a player would fit on a particular NBA team and be
able to run it. Rubio has been showing he can do that since the Olympics. Chris Paul and Jason Kidd were very impressed with Ricky Rubio. If the GMs do not
have a fix on how well he plays, how his being on their team might improve their overall level of play, and if his basketball abilities and potential, and
ability to draw interest by fans, here and abroad, are what they need by now, they ought to find other employment.
Agree with whomever you wish, SactoGreg. It neither makes the view you hold valid or invalid, just shared. I just prefer individual freedom to collective tyranny. Regardless how much or how little a person might be paid for his services, a person should be able to choose who they work for and under what conditions and in exchange for what, period. You seem not to share this view. Also, nobody is forcing these foolish sports team owners to give these young prima donna guys all this money or contracting themselves to pay them regardless how poorly they play or even if they get injured or unable to give 100% due to toxic lifestyles. The NBA is an association of franchise owners, with a paid tyrant to run it, coexisting with an overreaching union for the players, and parasitic agents. There is no valid reason why a player should be forced to play in any league or for any team he does not wish to contract his services to. Personally, if it were up to me, the contracts would all be based on actual production, with a much more comprehensive production measurement system, and how well the team does, with regard to championships, wins, turnout and gross income. I do not buy into the arbitrary owner/player percentage split either. And the only level playing field that should be enforced is the game officiating (which does not currently exist), not trying to force the equalizing of talent on all teams via forcing players to report to teams who draft them. Bigger cities are going to have an advantage regardless. It is up to the owners to be smart enough to hire the most competent executives to manage the franchise operation and hire competent personnel experts who recruit and hire the best coaches and players they can and to market the team in ways that appeal to prospective fans, locally, regionally and worldwide. San Antonio, with R.C. Buford and Greg Popovich manage to win regardless - even with the officials favoring the other team. I imagine they could adapt to whatever system that arose and find ways to find and hire the right players and win and fill the seats and remain solvent regardless.

I thought the Rubio buyout situation would get resolved easier than people thought. When the Spanish IRS agreed to take the buyout in trade from the team, it
became an asset and no longer a buyout clause that may or may not be invoked. Because it would be worthless if Rubio plays out his contract. It was clear the
Rubio would never play for the team and finish the contract. The transfer removed all the posturing and reduced it to a negotiation for how much and how long
it would take to decide. From that news bite, It seems like the decision is going to be swift.
